Realstar Management goes green by recycling 125,000 square yards of used carpet yearly

Realstar Management in partnership with flooring supplier Florstar and carpet manufacturer Shaw Industries announced a recycling initiative whereby 125,000 square yards of worn carpet will be diverted from landfill sites and shipped to Shaw’s Evergreen Nylon Facility in Augusta, Georgia. This volume of carpet, enough to cover 19 football fields will be remade into new nylon fibre which can then be used in the manufacture of new carpet. In addition, the worn carpet removed from Realstar managed properties will be replaced with recyclable carpet. This program was first introduced in the United States by Shaw Industries (a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, Inc. and the world’s largest carpet manufacturer headquartered in Dalton, Ga.) in 2006 and is the first of its type in Canada.

Consistent with the “green” philosophy of Realstar (its real estate investment arm, Realstar Properties Limited, is one of the largest owners of rental properties in Canada), the recycled carpet will be transported on pallets made of recycled cardboard and the carpet pad, plastic wrapping and cardboard scraps used to transport the rolls of carpet will also be collected and recycled.

“One of Realstar’s key values is curiosity and we thoroughly researched what could be done to have the greatest positive impact on a sustainable long term basis,” said Jamie Macdonald, Senior Vice President of Operations, Realstar.
