PCL Constructors, the largest general contracting organization in Canada, has provided a special incentive to keep 32 best-of-the-best carpentry apprentices at SAIT Polytechnic motivated and striving for excellence. The company presented 32 awards of $1,000 each to recognize the dedication and commitment to quality of SAIT’s top carpentry apprentices. The awards ceremony also marked the unveiling of the newly named PCL Construction Management Room at SAIT’s Mayland Heights Campus.
In November 2006, PCL Constructors donated $500,000 to SAIT, of which $150,000 was designated to scholarships for carpentry trade students. The funding will generate more than 100 student awards over several years. The remaining $350,000 of the donation will go toward construction of SAIT’s Trades and Technology Complex.
In response to industry demand, SAIT’s carpentry apprenticeship program will accommodate 928 students this year, an increase of 176 seats over last year.
The Alberta government announced on Sept. 19 it will provide $300 million toward construction of SAIT’s Trades and Technology Complex. On completion in 2012, the new facility will accommodate 2,100 more certificate, diploma and applied degree spaces as well as 6,000 additional apprentices each year, bringing the total number of SAIT apprentices to more than 17,000 — an increase of more than 50 per cent.
