The Delta Toronto, the new flagship hotel of the Delta Hotel chain, officially opens today in downtown Toronto. At a height of 160 metres and 46 stories, the new LEED-certified hotel, designed by Page+Steele/IBI Group Architects, is the largest and tallest freestanding hotel built in the city in the past 20 years.
Fronting on Bremner Street between the CN Tower, MTCC, and Rogers Centre to the west and Maple Leaf Square to the east, this mixed-use development is the newest addition to the rapidly growing Southcore sports and entertainment district. The hotel is the signature tower in what will be a fully integrated complex that includes two office towers to the east.
“The building represents the best in global hospitality design and will contribute significantly to the enhancement of the urban landscape of the city,” said Mansoor Kazerouni, executive vice president of Page + Steele/IBI Group Architects and Design Principal for the project. “It embodies Delta’s core values of community building, innovation, and excellence, and will rapidly become an important part of the city’s architectural identity as it assumes its prominent position in the skyline.”
The new hotel connects people with Toronto’s financial and entertainment districts through direct access to the PATH, via an urban forest roof, to Union Station and to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. The hotel acts as a stepping stone to neighbouring cultural and sporting events, attractions, and a revitalized waterfront.
“In conceiving this project architecturally, we recognized that it needed to make a bold statement,” said Kazerouni, who leads IBI Group’s urban high-rise building practice. “In a rapidly upward expanding city, this tower needed to be easily recognizable to the many first-time visitors that will arrive every day.”
“The building’s architecture is comprised of large building blocks articulated by playful graphic patterns that are fresh, innovative and memorable,” he added. “In keeping with Delta’s mission of being strong community builders, this building and Southcore Financial Centre will go a long way in building and reinforcing the Southcore community.”
