Hamilton plucks new General Manager of Planning from planningAlliance

planningAlliance is pleased to announce that principal Jason Thorne, has recently accepted an appointment as the General Manager of Planning and Economic Development with the City of Hamilton.

Thorne, who is originally from Hamilton, joined planningAlliance as a Senior Planner in 2009. During his career at pA, he led some of the firm’s most challenging regional planning projects in Ontario, Western Canada and West Africa. “When I became a Principal at planningAlliance, I planned to spend the rest of my career here. I’m quite sure the opportunity to be the head of Planning and Economic Development for my hometown is the only offer I would ever have considered.”

Prior to joining pA, Jason was Manager for the Ontario Growth Secretariat, and one of the key planners of Places to Grow, the Growth Plan for Canada’s rapidly developing Greater Golden Horseshoe region. A recipient of several national and international awards, the Plan is currently regarded as the new standard for regional planning in Ontario.

As Director of Transportation Policy and Planning for the government agency Metrolinx, Jason led the development of The Big Move, Ontario’s multi-modal 25-year regional transportation plan for the urban region around the City of Toronto. Jason’s work has been recognized by the Canadian Institute of Planners, the Ontario Professional Planners Institute, the Alberta Professional Planners Institute and the American Planning Association, winning a variety of awards for Planning Excellence.

“Hamilton is a dynamic and growing city and Jason will have a tremendous opportunity to give back to his home community,” says John van Nostrand, Founding Principal of planningAlliance and a native of Hamilton. “We are all excited for Jason in this new role and for Hamilton, which will benefit greatly from his skillsets and leadership.”
